How is the Mermade PRO wave designed?
The Mermade PRO Waver is designed somewhat like a triple barrel curling iron. It’s an original product from the brand and features three large 1.25″ barrels and a unifying clip that gently holds all three barrels. The bottom design features a stand and the end includes a rotating base for the product’s plug-in cord.

The PRO is coated with pink ceramic, a popular hair care material that evenly disperses heat. You can expect smoother results without the hot ceramic barrel, which is offered by Mermade.

This iron has a 60-minute auto shut-off feature and a digital heat display. It heats up to 360 degrees Fahrenheit, and the brand recommends that temperature setting for most hair types, but the temperature range is 180-410 degrees Fahrenheit. Press and hold the power button to turn the device off, or click once to turn it on. This wave heats up in under 60 seconds, which is fantastic. It also has real-time digital temperature feedback – if you accidentally set the temperature too high or too low at first, you’ll know when it’s safe to iron.

What’s the difference between a curling iron and a curling wand?
A curling iron only clips once and spins, unlike a curling wand, which has to be pressed onto the hair shaft. They bring a different look and very consistent results – with a curling iron, your waves are always the same shape and size, unlike what you see with a curling iron.

Curling irons come in more sizes than curling irons, but don’t produce the exact same look or uniformity. Perm curls look thicker and tend to be thicker due to their triple curl design.

How to use the Mermade PRO Waver
To use the Mermade PRO Waver, start by preparing your hair as you would any other hot tool. Apply a heat protectant and make sure your hair is completely dry. Then, separate your hair with bobby pins or clips so you’re only doing one hair at a time.

I like to part my hair horizontally (left/right) and in layers (top/bottom). Each layer is put down and I divide it into 2-4 smaller sections, each one individually designed. I have thin hair, so I only use three layers; for thicker hair, you may need more strands. A good rule of thumb is to only do 1-2″ strands of hair at a time (starting at the scalp).

Start at the nape of your neck and swing your hair in lower sections. Clip bobby pins into your hair and let sit for 3-5 seconds. Release the clip and move the iron down two waves. You’ll want to re-clip the last wave into the first barrel so that the barrel should match the curve of the wave. Clamp the other one for 3-5 seconds and repeat along the hair shaft.

An important thing to remember is that hair isn’t set until it’s cool to the touch! So, as you move down the hair shaft, remember not to pull on your finished section. If anything, clamp and then move your clamp (and the hair inside it) slightly upwards to “curl” your finished section as it cools. Finish by adding hairspray if desired.

For more pronounced waves, try the Mermade Mini PRO Waver, which has a 1″/25mm ceramic barrel, or the Mermade PRO Waver Cutie, which has a 0.9″/22mm ceramic barrel. (And it’s mauve in color!)

My experience with the Mermade PRO Waver
I have fine, thin, fragile hair. So, one of the features I appreciate most about the Mermade PRO Waver is its wide temperature range. The brand recommends creating waves in 3-5 second intervals at 360 degrees Fahrenheit, but I use longer intervals at lower temperatures. You have to be more patient as you lower the temperature, but if heat damage is your main concern, this is a great option.

For this review, I styled my hair every 5-8 seconds at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. This worked well for me and lasted for two days without needing a touch up.

I would recommend changing the temperature of the product to suit your hair type, whether it’s a lower temperature for fine hair or a higher temperature for coarse hair. I would also recommend being aware of the angle of the hairpin to your scalp:If the hairpin is cocked too far, it creates a hard line above the soft curls.Mermade makes up for this with soft curved tong edges, which is also helpful.I would also recommend changing the temperature of the product to suit your hair type.
