Outdoor Furniture Buying Guide

Build another “room” in your home
Backyards are often not considered in home layouts. But it’s actually another room that you can enjoy. Depending on where in Canada you live, you may only be able to take advantage of outdoor furniture during certain months of the year. But even if it’s only for a few months, the investment is worth it.

patio porch swing
Outdoor furniture expands the use of areas such as the backyard, porch or balcony. Enjoy relaxing on a hot, sunny day, a crisp spring morning, or a cool, breezy evening. With the right accessories, like an umbrella for shade, speakers for your music, a cozy fire pit or outdoor heater, smart lights, or even an outdoor TV, you’ll find that you spend far more time outdoors than you ever thought possible.

Make you and your guests feel comfortable
Spending time in the backyard or in front of the house becomes more comfortable and inviting with outdoor furniture. If guests see sofas and chairs outdoors, it is a warm and welcoming feeling that makes them want to stay longer. For your own comfort, being able to relax on a recliner, or even an outdoor daybed, conversation set, or patio swing, will encourage you to spend more time outdoors.

Vitamin D supplementation

Many people now work from home at least a few times a week. Outdoor furniture may encourage you to spend an hour or two outside the office each day to get that much-needed vitamin D. Use comfortable chairs, a dining table, a patio umbrella, or a covered deck or porch. Then take your coffee, laptop, phone, and laptop outside and enjoy a breezy workday instead of being cooped up indoors.

kids can have fun
If you have kids in your home or kids who visit a lot, patio furniture can make it easy to get outdoors. This may include eating, crafting, painting, or doing other messy and sticky activities that are more popular at an outdoor picnic table than an indoor dining room. Kids can also take a break from running around and play a board game or other fun activity while having a place to sit instead of on the deck or grass.

Types of outdoor furniture
Now, let’s take a look at the types of outdoor furniture. You can find the right outdoor furniture for your space with a little know-how and a few important things to consider. It first depends on the size of the space. For example, for a large outdoor deck, or a backyard with a pool, you might be looking for a sectional or large dining table with chairs. Conversely, for smaller spaces like a small backyard, porch, or balcony, a combination of two chairs and a small table or an Adirondack chair will do the trick.

large space outdoor furniture
Terraces and conversation units are ideal for large outdoor spaces. This includes conversations and meals.

Conversational fixtures can be large, sometimes L-shaped sofas with comfortable cushions to relax and enjoy some, um, conversation. Many of them also have a small table in the middle for drinks, snacks, or even a board or card game. These are ideal for decks or pools. You’ll need to measure to make sure it will fit your space well while still allowing the space to roam. Many are modular, so you can change the look to suit your space, such as splitting it into two sofas and sofa designs.

  1. Restaurant set
When dining al fresco, you’ll want a dining set, which is actually a dining table and outdoor chairs. Also great for placing on a patio or backyard on a stone or gravel section so it lays flat and many have a hole in the middle for an umbrella to keep the area shaded. If you’re hosting a lot of dinner parties in the spring and summer and you want to have them outside, outdoor dining sets are perfect. However, some people like to have a party just for the family to have breakfast al fresco on Sunday or dinner under the stars late Friday night.

Again, you want to consider size, material (more on that below), and comfort. Some outdoor dining sets come with basic wooden chairs that you can sit directly on or add cushions to. Some also include cushions. Notably, you can opt for a conversational set like a dining table, with seating arranged around a large table. However, these are best for casual dining, where people can sit down when they might be munching on finger food or eating something simple, like burgers and hot dogs instead of steak.

Check height as well as width and length. Some dining tables have taller chairs and high tables, which are great for drinking with friends and family, but may not be good for dining.
