Here are some ways to create a smart home
Everyone should consider building a smart home. Integrating Wi-Fi connected products into our homes opens up a world of possibilities. Smart home products not only save us money, they make our life more convenient and safer. A smart home is a smart choice. Let’s take a look at some ways to create a smart home.
Smart speakers and displays for a smart home
You may be asking yourself, what makes a home smart? At its core is a smart speaker or smart display. This brings voice assistance into your home. The brand you choose defines your smart home ecosystem. Google, Amazon, and Apple all have their own voice assistants. To activate the voice assistant, you have to say a wake word like “Hey Google, Alexa, or Siri.” You can ask it questions, like the weather report, play music, or turn on smart devices like lights.
A good tip is to place smart speakers or smart displays in different rooms of your home. This way, you can activate it anywhere in your home. I always recommend kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. The trick is grouping smart speakers together for multi-room audio. This is what I do. Every morning I listen to my favorite podcast in the shower. Then I change in my bedroom, with the same podcast playing on a smart display next to my bed. Then I walk into the kitchen and my kitchen smart display is playing a podcast.
Smart thermostats in smart homes
Smart Thermostats to Save on Energy Costs
The next smart device I recommend is a smart thermostat. As the cost of living rises, smart thermostats can help families save money on heating bills. Best of all, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to save on energy costs. Smart thermostats have the ability to learn and learn about your daily habits. From there, they adjust the temperature based on your occupancy, time of day, and even the weather. The net effect is to reduce energy use, which in turn saves money on heating bills.
To get started with a smart thermostat, first identify your heating system. Most homes have central heating and a master thermostat. However, some homes may have electric baseboard heating. In this case, each room has a thermostat. Thankfully, both heating systems have smart thermostats. Google Nest and Honeywell are popular central heating brands, while Mysa is worth considering for electric baseboard heating.
Smart lights for multi-color lighting in smart homes
The next smart home product I recommend people buy is smart Lights. These bulbs look like traditional light bulbs but have many smart features. With smart lights, use your voice to turn lights on and off. You can also set a light schedule in the app. This brings new ways of turning lights on and off. Second, smart lights offer multi-color lighting options. This is a great way to set the mood in your home. Make all the lights blue or purple for movie night. I recommend using different light color combinations indoors for cool lighting effects.
There are several different types of smart lights for indoor and outdoor lighting. Personally, I’m a huge fan of LED lights. They are small, flexible LED strips with adhesive. I mount them under desks, on kitchen countertops, and behind TVs. The trick is to get the light bouncing off the white wall. I built a man cave and shone the light on top of the top of the wall. Lights bouncing off the ceiling illuminate the room nicely. Plus, I can change the light color anytime. I use white during the day and purple at night.
Smart Locks in Smart Homes
smart lock keyless entry
Smart locks are one of my favorite smart home gadgets. They provide a secure way to enter and exit your home without keys. Additionally, the lock can be controlled remotely via a smartphone. What I like about them is that you can create temporary access codes. This is the perfect solution for short-term suit rentals in my home. I create a temporary pin and then delete it after the guest checks out. Also, I was able to see activity logs of guests coming in and out of the suite. It also lets cleaners and contractors into your home.
Smart Security Cameras in Your Smart Home
Smart Security Cameras for Peace of Mind
If you’re looking for peace of mind, consider buying a smart security camera. These cameras connect to your Wi-Fi network and feature motion detection. If the camera detects movement, you’ll get a push notification and the video will be recorded to the cloud. You can also remotely watch the camera footage in real time.
